What is DNA? – The human body consists of trillions of cells. Most of these cells have a nucleus, or center. The nucleus contains deoxyribonucleic acid molecules, commonly known by its acronym DNA. The genetic information contained in DNA determines all the specific characteristics of a person. Every person is born with their own unique DNA, with the exception of identical twins.
What does paternity mean? – The word “paternity” simply means fatherhood. A DNA test can prove or disprove whether an alleged father is the biological father of a child or not.
How accurate are the results? - We provide the most extensive testing available in the industry. If the DNA of the alleged father and child matches, the probability that he is included as the biological father is typically 99.999%. However, if the DNA between the alleged father and child do not match, he is 100% excluded as being the biological father.
- Exclusion – When the alleged father’s DNA does not match the child’s, the paternity test proves that the tested man is NOT the biological father of the child. The probability of paternity is 0%, and we are 100% certain that the man is not the biological father.
- Inclusion – When the tested man’s DNA does match the child’s, then probability of paternity is determined. The average probability of paternity is greater than 99.999%.
Who needs to be tested? - Traditionally, a sample is collected from the mother, the child and the alleged father in DNA paternity testing. However, when samples are only obtained from one parent and child, the parentage test is still performed with the same accuracy.
When will the results be available? - Results are usually available in 3-5 business days from the day specimens are received by the laboratory. We can make special arrangements for rush results, which are available the next day for an additional charge.
What types of samples are collected? - Samples are easily obtained from the inside of the mouth with a buccal swab. It is just as accurate as a blood test; however this procedure is painless and non-invasive, making it a much more desirable test, especially in the case of small children.
At what age can DNA testing be performed? - A DNA test can be performed at any age using a buccal swab (cheek swab). Prenatal Testing can also be performed about the ninth week of pregnancy with procedures done with the assistance of a physician.
Are the results admissible in court? - Yes, they are. Accurate Paternity Testing of Massachusetts identification procedures, strict chain of custody documentation, and stringent testing protocols greatly exceed state and federal government standards and DNA testing guidelines established by national accreditation agencies.
Is Paternity Testing covered by health insurance? - No, paternity testing is not considered medically necessary and therefore is not covered.
