Infidelity Testing and Semen Detection

If you suspect your spouse or significant other is cheating on you, give yourself piece of mind with an infidelity test. An infidelity test can detect the presence of DNA (male or female) deposited within a stain or a sample that you may want to have analyzed.

Semen Detection Test – semen detection can prove whether a stain resulted from semen or not. If the stain did result from semen, then it is further tested for the presence of sperm. Sperm contains the DNA that is needed for testing, then infidelity testing can be conducted. An infidelity test compares the DNA from the stain with a reference sample.

Infidelity Testing – infidelity testing compares the DNA found in the sperm from the semen stain sample to a reference/suspect sample. A simple buccal swab is all that is needed to provide a reference sample, however when confidentiality is an issue, non-standard samples can be submitted for testing. If the DNA in the stain does not match that of your DNA for your reference sample, the results indicate that the semen is from another man. In most cases, a DNA profile can be obtained from a vasectomized man.

Testing for Epithelial Cells – Epithelial cells are skin cells that are naturally sloughed off by the human body. After a semen detection test is completed, a differential extraction can be performed to separate the male and female components. A simple buccal swab is all that is needed to provide a reference sample for comparison.

Legality - Semen detection and infidelity testing are not typically legally admissible in the court of law. Because the samples are usually self-collected and submitted for testing, the results are not typically legally binding. If the test is needed for legal purposes, then a private investigator or other neutral third party can be hired to collect the sample. A strict chain-of-custody must then also be followed.

Turnaround Time
Semen Detection – average 3-5 days
Infidelity Test – average 5-7 days

Types of Samples - Each case is unique; therefore clients may submit a variety of samples. The most common articles submitted for semen detection/infidelity testing include:

  • Panties/underwear
  • Bed Sheets
  • Bath Towels
  • Pantyhose
  • Feminine hygiene products (panty liners)
  • Other garments

Sample Submission and Storage - It is important that the sample NOT be stored in plastic or zip lock bags. The sample could grow mold and destroy any viable DNA needed for testing. Depending on the size of the article being submitted, proper storage methods include:

  • White paper envelopes
  • Paper bags
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Manila paper envelopes
